Welcome to the Pallister Park Year 5 Page
Welcome to the Pallister Park Y5 page!
Our topic this half term is Stargazers – an exciting journey into space.
We have lots of exciting things planned for our space-themed topic this half term: Exploring the solar system, designing rockets and looking at our own position in this vast universe!
We are starting the year by exploring quest stories based on the David Roberts story ‘Little Red’ – a humorous adaptation of Little Red Riding Hood. We will be using talk for writing to learn a reliable pattern and eventually create our own thrilling quest tales in class. We look forward to sharing some of our best work with you!
In Maths we will be focusing on the following areas:
- Number and Place Value
- Properties of shapes
- Position and direction
However, our big push with our children is times tables. Children are expected to know them all by the end of year five so it would be great for an extra push at home aswell as in school!
Earth and Space – an exploration of the solar system, the reasons for night and day and how a rocket is blasted into space form part of this exciting unit of science work.
Resources to access at home:
is an interactive way to improve times table skills and mental maths.
Googling topmarks – Hit the Button will also guide you to a fun interactive game which allows children to practice their times table skills.
The Spelling Shed is an app which can be downloaded* from the app store for anyone that has access to an apple or android phone. It has lots of useful games and keeps track of your child’s progress!
*There is a small cost for this purchase
Parents’ consultations will be held on Monday 9th
October and Wednesday 11th
October. Please make sure letters are returned. We operate on a first come first served basis for popular time spots.
We have booked a trip to the Life Centre in Newcastle on Monday 6th
November 2017. More information will be provided closer to the time.
Weekly spellings are given out to the children and tested on a Monday. If you wish to challenge your children further, you will find the statutory age-related spellings at the back of their planner as well as a collection of other useful information which is important for the children! Please make sure your children practice with regularity.
Our primary aim is for children to enjoy reading. We do not expect the children to read every night as we know schedules can be busy but it is very important that they read as often as possible. Please ensure your child is able to tell you about the books they read and can answer questions before they change their book. Understanding is a very important part of the process. We do look at planners every day in class so please let us know about any issues you may have at home. Do tell us the good things aswell. We are always pleased to hear that your child is enjoying a particular book! If they are enjoying a story at home they are more than welcome to bring it in to school.
