The primary National Strategy Letters and Sounds is followed throughout school and begins in Nursery 1 with the introduction of phase one, focusing on sound discrimination, rhythm and rhyme, alliteration, voice sounds and oral blending and segmenting.

Nursery 2 continues the development of phase one with a high emphasis on oral blending and segmenting, introducing phase two as and when each child is ready.  Nursery 2 enjoys using Jolly Phonics resources to familiarise children with initial sounds.

In reception phase 1 continues to underpin the curriculum as the children revisit phase two in which 19 letter sounds are taught as well as high frequency words and blending and segmenting.  Again when the children are ready phase 3 sounds are then introduced using Read Write Inc Rhymes, moving on to phase 4 when ready.

When the children enter year one phases 2 and 3 are revisited, phase four is covered and when the children are ready phase 5 is taught.  In the summer term all year one children take part in a phonics check, this is a national test in which the children read 20 real words and 20 pseudo words (non-sense /alien words).  Read Write Inc resources are used to cover phase 3, 4 and phase 5 sounds.

In year two all phases are revisited and teaching of phase six is introduced when the children are ready.  As in year one, Read Write Inc resources are used to teach sounds and letter formation.
