Year 1

This year we will be covering:

Autumn term 1 – Do You Remember?

Children will learn about the history of their own lives and also asking the questions how have toys changed during the past 100 years and why?

Autumn term 2 – Rocket Man

Children will be learning why Neil Armstrong and Dr Nicholas Patrick are significant individuals and how they contributed to national and international achievements.

Spring term 1 – Walk the Dinosaur

The children will be undertaking a study of the sculptor Genevieve Glatt. They will use a range of materials creatively to design and make products, then evaluate their work. They will also identify and name a variety of common animals including fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals. They will learn to use the vocabulary herbivore, omnivore and carnivore.

Spring term 2 – I Need a Hero!

Children will identify, name, draw and label the basic parts of the human body and say which part of the body is associated with each sense. They will also learn why Florence Nightingale is remembered and how nursing has changed since 1854.

Summer term 1 – London Calling!

Children will learn how the Great Fire of London changed peoples’ lives. They will learn about the United Kingdom, where they live, which features are physical and human and about the capital cities.

Summer term 2 – If you go down to the woods today …

Children will identify and name a variety of common wild and garden plants, including deciduous and evergreen trees. They will describe the basic structure of a variety of common flowering plants, including trees.

PE is every Tuesday. Children will take part in several different activities including target games, gymnastics, dance, invasion games and athletics.

Homework will be focusing on:

Reading!

Your child will bring home a book matched to their phonics level. They will keep this book until they have read three times with an adult either at home or at school.

Please read with your child every night to improve their reading confidence and fluency.

Please write in or sign your child’s planner when you have read with them just so we know that they have read.
